People, not Politics
My name is Derrick Nowlin, and I want to be your state representative for the Missouri 134th district. Our government has served the interests of Big Money at the expense of the people for far too long, but I’m going to change that with your vote. Until the last couple of years, I never imagined myself running for office. I always thought running for office was for politicians, not regular people like me. However, I have come to realize that all it really takes to do this job is integrity, willingness to listen, and motivation to work hard every single day, doing the people’s business.
As a third generation Springfieldian, I have deep roots in our community. I graduated from Glendale High School and began working as a land surveyor, while learning the skills at Missouri State University that I use today in my work as a zoning and site planning specialist. I have always been a working class person, and I enjoy having a career that benefits my community.
In my 25-year career, I have managed survey crews and performed civil design and drafting. I have estimated costs, managed projects, and inspected finished results. Much of this work has been on public projects like roads, bridges, and utilities, and I’m very proud to say that. It’s satisfying to work each day for the public good, making sure each dollar is spent wisely and each project meets the highest standards. My work has helped me to see how our investment in public services like infrastructure and education creates a community that benefits us all.
We have a lot to be proud of here in the 134th. The balanced mix of business, industry, and great neighborhoods makes it an important part of the greater Springfield community. I’m proud of our part of town, and I will represent it fairly. When I am your State Representative, I will be the voice of those who feel unheard and invisible to the people in power in Jefferson City.
In July of 2015, I helped start a local grassroots group in support of Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign. Because I understood Bernie’s message of becoming involved locally and trying to change things at the local level, I pursued an opening on the Greene County Central Democratic Committee and was elected as Committeeman in Ward 33 A/B – a seat I am still proud to hold. I had the honor and privilege to be elected not only a State Delegate for Bernie Sanders, but as a National Delegate as well. After attending both the state and national conventions, I focused on helping as many state and local candidates as I could heading into the 2016 general election. I was then asked to consider running for State Representative in the 134th legislative district, in April of 2017. I have been preparing to run this campaign for progressive change in Springfield ever since. The point of me telling you all this about myself is to show that I am just like you. I am a regular, working person who decided to get involved in helping make my community a better place. And now I want to represent others like me, who don’t feel represented in by the insiders in Jefferson City.
Like you, I live each day with the goal of leaving a better world for my children and grandchildren. I believe that each generation is obliged to leave things a little better than we found them for those who will come after us. If we want to be able to keep that promise for future generations of Missourians, we need to make sure our state government is made up of people who share those values and live them each and every day. That’s why I’m running for State Representative in the 134th District, and that’s why I’m asking for your vote.
